Finally,
I’m crossing the threshold
From the Ordinary World
To the reveal of my heart…
That will for certain
Take the Dead out of the Sea
And the Darkness from the Arts…

Sometimes it feels like I’ve got a war in my mind,
I want to get off, but I keep riding the ride…

I wanna move
Out of the Black
Into the Blue…”

~Lana Del Rey, “Get Free”

Get Free

I watch an elderly man hunched
back in old times, how
things are different now
than they were then.

I hear a young child cry, piercing
my ears, but I was eight and didn’t
whine in agony or fear
of growing older.

I sense a boy’s eyes on my
head back the other way,
graze my hips and thighs
high into the day.

Some days I just can’t take it
like a man, I’m a girl;
other days I rejoice in my body
bags under my eyes: a new world,

Black and Blue.
Now tell me:
What’s it like to be you?
