Floating

By Brinn Wallin

Heads up! Close your eyes,
Listen to the sound of the swallowing tide
as the sun begins to set and the waves start to rise
like fog in the misty morning.

Don’t let yourself plummet down,
swallowed by the sea in one mighty GULP!
like Jonah in the belly of the whale—
How did he get out?

If it were me,
I would have risen to the surface of its throat,
slit it clean and used its tongue as a boat
back to the shore of my distant home.

No, that’s not exactly right;
I don’t think I would have put up a fight.
I think I might’ve screamed just to hear the musical echo
of my silence in the dark trace the walls like a fresco;

God’s hand might’ve reached out to me then,
just as it did to Jonah (so the story goes);
and like Adam on the brink of creation,
I’d extend my arm out like Cupid’s bow,
in pure FRUSTRATION!!!

But I am not Adam, nor am I God;
Not Cupid, or Jonah in the whale’s belly; I am me.
Like Eve, I’d break all the rules for the simple pleasure
of tasting the fruit of life amidst the ocean of death
surrounding.

Now close your eyes so you don’t have to see
me drowning
.
